Innovative ways to increase storage space in your kitchen, bedroom and bathroom

Dec 6, 2019 | News

As space is a commodity and houses continue to get smaller and smaller and as your family grows so does finding enough space in your home. Increasing the available storage space and making the most out of existing spaces when designing a home, requires both innovative and creative solutions.

Read more to get a few tips that could inspire your next designs:

Kitchen storage
Kitchens can be one of the busiest rooms in a home and a hub of activity. Here are some ways in which you can create additional storage space to make room for all the kitchen appliances, utensils, crockery and cutlery; without compromising the space you have to move around.

  •   Ensure that the kitchen cabinetry is custom designed to perfectly fit the kitchen space. This will ensure that no space is left empty, thus maximising available space, and that the cabinets are not oversized or ill-fitted, which would result in precious storage space being wasted.
  •   Vertical storage is an excellent way to increase the available storage space in a smaller kitchen. You can create vertical storage by installing shelves, floating shelves, mug hooks and racks on empty walls or the wall space above your cabinets.
  •   Install hooks on the inside of cabinet and cupboard doors to create additional storage space on which you can hang cloths, mugs and other hanging items.
  •   Make the most out of an otherwise unused space by installing specialised corner drawers into your kitchen cabinets.
  •   Vertical pull-out racks are another excellent way to create additional storage space by making use of otherwise redundant narrow gaps. Vertical pull out racks are excellent for storing smaller items like spices and condiments.

Bedroom storage
There never seems to be enough storage space in the bedroom, no matter how big the closet is – which is why coming up with additional storage space is an absolute must when designing a room.

  •   Make use of multifunctional furniture such as a bed with built-in storage drawers underneath, bedside tables that contain storage space and headboard units that have additional built-in storage space in the form of shelves and drawers. You can store anything in these spaces, as well as use them to display objects, such as plants, books and other Knick knacks – making them a multifunctional and trendy addition to any bedroom.
  •   Make use of vertical storage by building floor to ceiling cabinets or shelves, as these can be used for storage and display purposes. These cabinets and shelves can also be built to surround doorways, thus making use of otherwise unused spaces.
  •   Floating shelves and desks can create storage space in places where there is otherwise no room for a cabinet or standing desk.

Bathroom storage
The bathroom is one of the smallest rooms in a home, which can make creating extra storage space a challenging task.

  •   Make use of otherwise empty wall space by carving out a niche in which you can add shelves, which can be used to store bath products, toiletries, extra towels and plants.
  •   Built-in bathroom cabinets that are custom designed to fit into the available space in the bathroom will ensure that no space is wasted unnecessarily. Custom-fitted bathroom cabinets will not only make proper use of the space but will also create additional storage space both on top of and within them.
  •   Floating shelves above the bath can make use of otherwise unused space within the bathroom and can be used for both storage and display purposes.
  •   Choosing vertical storage, such as floating shelves, in a narrower space will ensure that less is more as additional height will compensate for width.
  •   Utilise the space above the door by installing floating shelves which can be used to store spare towels.

These tips will not only help you increase the amount of available storage when designing a home but will also ensure that the existing space is maximised to increase space.
