Can the addition of natural elements truly uplift people’s moods?

Mar 10, 2022 | News

Any interior design expert will tell you that trends are constantly shifting and changing, inviting new and exciting avenues to explore within the office and home interiors. One such trend that is quickly becoming popular in modern homes is the application of biophilic elements within these spaces.

As companies and consumers start to adopt a more environmentally conscious approach to interior design, it becomes clear that the benefits of natural elements go beyond just simple aesthetics. This is perhaps the core reason why we are seeing more and more experts incorporating biophilic elements into modern homes and offices.

Biophilia – what it is, and why it’s
trending

In the past, biophilic elements were seen as nothing more than a niche trend. Today, the movement has escalated to an almost universal level. But what exactly is Biophilia, and how has it changed the way we view interior design projects?

Defined as “an innate and genetically determined affinity of human beings with the natural world,” Biophilic designs resonate with our deepest connections to the natural world. Recent studies have suggested that introducing natural elements into your home goes deeper than simply an aesthetic appeal. Moreover, it is said to improve both physical and mental health while improving productivity.

Innovation through natural forms

In essence, biophilic design has the benefit of uplifting our mood. The corporate world, in particular, has spent quite a bit of time investigating the positive impacts this growing
trend has upon the productivity of its employees. Natural elements forming part of the office plan works to help people feel more comfortable, feel content with their daily tasks, and be happier in the process. Because of this, employers are paying special attention to these quality of life changes.

Looking at the bigger picture, biophilic design is becoming entrenched in modern architecture right down to the planning and building level. Beyond the simple application of greenery and indoor zen gardens, the biophilic design method also exists in structural designations as well. From good ventilation to the use of natural lighting as opposed to air conditioning and electric lighting fixtures.

In interior design, biophilic elements embrace this architectural philosophy. Rooms should always bask in natural light, the colour and décor scheme should follow suit, and beyond that, a healthy addition of indoor plants. The idea is to ensure that wherever you look, the splendour of nature is omnipresent.
