Balance has a definite and soothing effect on our subconscious and certainly how we feel about a space. In order for us to experience absolute ease with our surroundings, the space should be well designed using various design techniques to create a balanced feeling. When used well, balance is a very powerful design tool. Here are 3 tips to consider when redesigning your space.
- Consider what your architecture allows:
In most cases, balance can easily be achieved by arranging furniture, accessories, colours and textures so that they mirror each other on either side of the rooms axis or focal point. In some rooms, however, the architecture may not be symmetrical and will affect the design you are trying to accomplish, resulting in the room looking haphazard. For rooms such as these, you may want to consider achieving balance through asymmetrical uses of visual weight, colour and texture. - Consider visual weight:
Visual weight plays a significant role in achieving balance within an area and can be especially helpful in rooms with a more modern and dynamic architectural design. Using different accessories such as indoor plants, mirrors, furniture, wall-art and statuettes to compensate for an empty area, can bring in some much needed visual weight and therefore allow for a balance to the room’s interior design. - Consider colour and texture:
Colours and textures add depth and intrigue and can be an interior designer’s best friend for creating beautiful rooms. Ensure that both light and dark shades of colour are used throughout the room, as well as a variety of different textures from smooth looking objects to items with a rough visual appearance. Following these two tips for colour and texture will prevent the room from looking flat and bland while helping to accentuate specific areas and draw the eye to where you want it to go.
With a well-balanced space, you can be sure that a calm and pleasant experience will be had by all who walk in.
