What is the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)?
The aim of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), a non-profit international organisation, is to promote responsible forest management practices. To meet its strict standards and become FSC certified, forestry operations must practise forestry in a way that is environmentally responsible and socially conscious.
The FSC certification is deemed the “gold standard” designation for forestry good practices.
Why is the FSC label important?
The FSC label certifies that endangered plant and wildlife species and the rights of indigenous peoples are protected and that forests are preserved for future generations as their harvested trees are either replaced or allowed to regrow naturally. The FSC UK states that FSC is the “only forest certification scheme endorsed by the major environment charities including WWF, Greenpeace and the Woodland Trust”.
What does the FSC label mean?
The FSC label, designated as a “tick tree” mark, guarantees that the origin of its wood or paper materials is from FSC-certified forests. It provides details of the source of any forestry materials used in the manufacturing of the completed product. There are three types of FSC label: 100%, FSC Mix or FSC Recycled.
- FSC 100 percent: Products come from FSC-certified forests.
- FSC recycled: The wood or paper in a product comes from reclaimed, or 100% recycled, material.
- FSC mixed: A combination of materials from FSC-certified forests, recycled materials, and/or FSC controlled wood is used. Wood is classed as controlled by the FSC when there is limited risk of it having been harvested improperly as its origin is known to the FSC.
How is FSC accreditation attained/ achieved?
Forest products are tracked from source along the supply chain using three control systems: the transfer system, percentage system and credit system. Certification is required at each stage to ensure that the finished product can rightfully be labelled as FSC-certified. To find out how this chain of custody process is applied, visit;
